Culture and history info

The earliest known inhabitants of the Balearic Islands were the Talayotic people, who arrived around 3000 BCE and left behind impressive megalithic monuments, including the iconic talayots and taulas. These ancient structures dot the landscape of the islands, serving as a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of their builders.

In the 8th century BCE, the Phoenicians established trading outposts on the islands, followed by the Carthaginians, who founded settlements such as Palma on Majorca. The islands became known for their strategic location in the western Mediterranean, serving as a vital hub for maritime trade and commerce.

During the Punic Wars, the Balearic Islands fell under Roman control in the 2nd century BCE and became part of the Roman Republic. In the 5th century CE, the Balearic Islands came under the control of the Vandals, followed by the Byzantines, before being conquered by the Moors in the 10th century. During the Moorish period, the islands thrived as centers of agriculture, trade, and scholarship, with the establishment of irrigation systems, markets, and universities.

In 1229, the Balearic Islands were conquered by King James I of Aragon, marking the beginning of the islands' incorporation into the Crown of Aragon. Over the centuries, the islands became an important part of the Aragonese and later the Spanish Empire, serving as naval bases and trading ports.

During the 20th century, the Balearic Islands experienced a resurgence in tourism, with the development of modern infrastructure, hotels, and resorts to accommodate visitors from around the world.

How to reach

To reach the Balearic Islands, you have several transportation options available:

By Air: The most common way to reach the Balearics is by flying into one of the major airports on the islands. Palma de Mallorca Airport (Son Sant Joan Airport) is the largest airport and serves as the main gateway to the archipelago. Other airports include Menorca Airport (Mahon Airport) on Minorca, Ibiza Airport, and Formentera Airport. These airports are well-connected to many major cities in Europe and other parts of the world.
By Sea: Another popular option is to travel to the Balearic Islands by ferry or cruise ship. There are regular ferry services connecting the islands with mainland Spain, as well as with other nearby Mediterranean countries such as Italy. The main ferry ports on the islands include Palma de Mallorca, Mahon (on Minorca), Ibiza Town, and La Savina (on Formentera). Additionally, many cruise lines include the Balearic Islands as stops on their Mediterranean itineraries.
By Private Yacht or Boat: For those traveling with their own yacht or boat, the Balearic Islands offer numerous marinas and ports where you can moor your vessel. The islands have a well-developed infrastructure for nautical tourism, with facilities and services available for sailors and yachters.
